Anisotropy plays and important role in determining the magnetic structure of thin films. By the Mermin-Wagner theorem, long range order is impossible in its absence in low-dimensional systems. The competition of the contributions of different types of anisotropy gives rise to a wealth of magnetic phases from ferromagnetism to skyrmions. In the talk I will discuss the temperature dependence of isosotropy in detail. I will demonstrate the use of metadynamics, a new simulation technique, to explore the free energy of simple magnetic systems.
